Magic Mushrooms Super Natalensis – prepared grow kit with active mycelium
Super Natalensis is one of the better-known South African lines in the world of magic mushrooms. The commercial name is often associated with Natal Super Strength, commonly abbreviated as NSS, and stands apart from many classic Cubensis varieties.
The Super Natalensis grow kit contains a prepared mushroom culture with active mycelium together with the corresponding accessories. This gives you a clearly organised kit containing biological material that requires clean and careful handling.
What is Super Natalensis?
The name Natalensis refers to the South African region of KwaZulu-Natal, where Psilocybe natalensis was originally described. Within the magic mushroom scene, names such as Natal Super Strength, NSS and Super Natalensis have also become widely established.
Some caution is required when it comes to exact scientific classification. Recent genetic studies indicate that several cultures sold as Psilocybe natalensis or Natal Super Strength do not match the type material of Psilocybe natalensis. A significant number of these commercial lines appear instead to be more closely associated with Psilocybe ochraceocentrata. For this reason, we primarily use the established commercial name Super Natalensis for this product without presenting an uncertain species classification as a proven fact.
Typical appearance of Super Natalensis
Super Natalensis lines are often associated with relatively slender fruiting bodies and small to medium-sized caps. Their appearance can therefore look noticeably more delicate than that of many classic Cubensis varieties.
Colour, shape and size may still vary within the same culture. Mycelium and fruiting bodies are biological materials, so natural differences between individual kits are completely normal.
Short instructions for the Super Natalensis grow kit
- Work in a clean environment and wash or disinfect your hands before handling the grow kit.
- Remove the supplied cultivation bag from the cardboard packaging.
- Add approximately 0.2–0.3 litres of still bottled water to the plastic bag, not to the grow box itself.
- Place the closed grow box containing the substrate inside the bag.
- Only open the grow box once it is positioned inside the prepared bag.
- Keep the lid, as it may be needed again later.
- Lightly mist the inside of the setup using clean still water.
- Close the top of the cultivation bag securely with clips or tape.
- Keep the setup in a warm, stable environment and avoid strong temperature fluctuations.
- Open the bag briefly at regular intervals to allow fresh air exchange.
- As this is a biological product, development times can vary from one culture to another.

Clean handling of the mushroom culture
A mushroom culture consists of sensitive biological material. Clean hands, a sanitised work surface and minimal unnecessary contact with the substrate help reduce the risk of introducing unwanted organisms.
Dust, dirty equipment and strong draughts can also carry microorganisms. The Super Natalensis grow kit should therefore be kept in a clean, protected environment and handled only with clean hands or suitable gloves.
Location and light
Direct sunlight should be avoided. It can cause the grow box to heat up excessively and may affect the mushroom culture. A protected location with indirect ambient light is generally more suitable.
Strong temperature fluctuations are also unfavourable for biological material. Areas directly next to radiators, sun-heated windows or other heat sources are therefore best avoided.
Humidity and water
The supplied cultivation bag helps protect the prepared culture from its surroundings. Whenever water or additional equipment is used, cleanliness is particularly important to reduce the chance of unwanted microorganisms coming into contact with the substrate.
Any containers or spray bottles used should be clean. Unnecessary opening or frequent handling of the culture, on the other hand, can increase the risk of contamination.
Super Natalensis is a natural product
No mushroom grow kit develops in exactly the same way. Growth rate, appearance and development can vary even when the starting material is comparable.
Differences in size, shape or the number of visible fruiting bodies are therefore not automatically a sign of poor quality. A certain degree of natural variation is normal with mushroom cultures.
Recognising possible contamination
Even a healthy mushroom culture can change in appearance during development. However, unusual green, red or distinctly grey areas, an abnormal smell or visibly foreign growth may indicate contamination.
If contamination by mould, other fungi or bacteria is suspected, the kit should not be stored together with other mushroom cultures or continue to be used.

Frequently asked questions about Magic Mushrooms Super Natalensis
Is Super Natalensis the same as Psilocybe natalensis?
Not necessarily. Super Natalensis and Natal Super Strength are established commercial names. Recent genetic studies suggest that many cultures sold as Natalensis may in fact belong to another closely related species.
What does NSS mean?
NSS is commonly used as an abbreviation for Natal Super Strength. The name has been used for years for different commercial lines from the Natalensis group.
Where does the name Natalensis come from?
The name refers to KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa. Psilocybe natalensis was originally described from this region.
Why can different Super Natalensis grow kits look different?
Mycelium and fruiting bodies are biological materials. Their shape, size and appearance can therefore vary naturally from one culture to another.
Why is cleanliness especially important with a mushroom grow kit?
Mushroom cultures can be sensitive to foreign microorganisms. Clean hands, sanitised surfaces and minimal contact with the substrate help reduce the risk of contamination.
How can possible contamination be recognised?
Unusual discolouration, foreign growth or an abnormal smell may indicate contamination. If in doubt, the kit should no longer be used.
